Does anyone know the value of a 1954 lionel dealer display layout that is in
the same condition as when it was made. The layout is in complete working
order and has both original train sets as advertised in the catolouge it was in

G'Day! You have a great site which I found quite by accident, but is now bookmarked.
The Cripple Creek loco featured in your prototype gallery is a Meyer-type
articulated built by W.G.Bagnall Ltd, their Works No.2831 of 1946. It was
originally built for the Darnall and Felixton Sugar Estates, Natal, Africa.
For more information see the book "Meyer Articulated Locomotives, The Definitive
History." by Donald Binns and Gunter Koch.

I am designing and building a modified(scaled down in size) logging railroad based
on the Australian "Red Stag" layout in HOn3 and part dual HO guage. I am interested
in communicating with anyone that can help me finalize and prioritize my design.

I started in HOn30 back in the sixties with Egger Bahn
and some Roco stuff. Now that I am retired I am back into
model railroading and have built a layout and I am thinking
of putting in a bit of HOn30 trackage using Roco and Peco
products. Too bad I never saved my Eggerbahn and MiniTrains
stuff. I would be interested in hearing from other HOn30
fans.

the old Eggerbahn stuff plus some Roco. Someone but I don't
remember who was going to bring out models of the Maine
two-foot stuff for HOn30 but it never happened. I am now
retired and building a model rr. I would like to put in
some industrial trackage or logging.Anyone making kits, trucks or engines?

Dear Jorgen,
Cencerning the Egger Bahn 2-6-2 Maine ng steamengine:
At a recent exhibition I found a stand that sold this Egger Bahn model in a
wooden collectors case.I had never known there was such an Egger Bahn model
so I asked what it was. It turned out the propietor had found enough parts
for 10 of these models and had them assembled in the republic of Tsjechia.
He kept one for himself and as far as I know has sold off the other nine.
If you're interested I can probably find his address.
I'm editor for a Dutch railroad magazine with an interest in US ng.

Even though I have been modeling only in HO Scale, I would love to give HOn30 a try. The reason, the railroads of my country were build in the metric gauge, so I guess that HOn30 models will look a little close to the Costa Rican prototypes. You never know, maybe with some kitbashing and some scratchbuilding I will design a module of a place down here.

Just up the road from me is a village called Ruyton-of-the-Eleven Towns. Just down the road is Baschurch. 30 minutes drive is the Glyn Valley Tramway and 45 minutes is Snailbeach. Mix them up and I have the Ruyton Valley Tramway with a glorious 009 mix of Beyer Peacock tram engines, GVT coaches and wagons and Snailbeach buildings, all in the local sandstone!

Thinking about changing from HO Trolleys to HOn30 to eliminate the overhead wire effort/maintenance and provide better access to the track. The modeling effort for the engine mods does not look to be as much as scratch building a complete trolley car and I kind of like doing that stuff. HOn30 also has real character and I can add a nice steam sound system which does a lot for a model railroad.

I have been interested in HOn30 since I was a kid and got some of the AHM minitrains as a kid. I now use the two Plymouth diesels and other units in a brick yard/quarry module on my regular HO layout. Here in the Lancaster area, just beyond the end of the Dillerville yard along the Columbia branch of the PRR was a brickyard and quarry. In the early 70s as a kid I walked there and looked around. By then the quarry and brick plant had long since been bulldozed for housing developments, but the ovens and foundation for the cooling/loading house remained. There were narrow gauge tracks that ran from the ovens to the long edge of the cooling house and standard gauge tracks along the other side. (Which is what makes me suspect that they loaded bricks into standard gauge cars here) The narrow gauge tracks then went off into the woods toward the housing (Where the plant and quarry had been I suspect). The tracks end abruptly so I guess they were torn up by the contractor. The tracks also go off in the other direction but that is now a sports field so who knows for sure what was there (engine house, car shop and storage yard perhaps) All my efforts to find out what was there in local records don't get very far as they list the brick company, but very little about its operation except that it died during the depression (like so much else in this country). I have extrapilated what I think it was and made a line side business with its own narrow gauge railroad operation. It makes an interesting module for my layout and I get to use my HOn30 stuff. I am looking for another AHM Plymouth diesel if you know where I might find one. I am also in the process of remotoring them with cans unless you have a better suggestion. The only rolling stock that I have at the moment is the AHM minitrains cars and I am looking for other cars. I have printed out much of the info on your web site here and will read and digest as I go, but any ides you might have will be appreciated. I do have one of the SR&RL brass cabooses but it is far to big to be pulled around by the little Plymouths. So I either need bigger motive power, or other options. Again any suggestions will be appreciated. I have enjoyed this visit to your site and look forward to hearing from you in the future. Thanks Bruce

An impressive site which I know I will enjoy many times... I did visit the Forney Wheelbase link and would like to add the in the book "Maine Two Foot Pictorial SR & RL Locomotives" Gary Kohler indicates that the SR & RL also had engine #23 a 2-6-2 51" wheelbase with 33" divers built by Baldwin and #24 a 2-6-2 with 42" wheelbase and 33" drivers also built by baldwin............ Again thanks for a wonderful site.

My narrow gauge is a little larger than yours, but I did find your site interesting. It is steam, you know. I did find a link to narrow Gauge & Shortline Gazette. Thanks. I just wandered into a site that lists Railroad publications and has ?? for the Gazette. Hopefully I can relay the information to them. It's the best source of narrow gauge modeling help I have found. Currently I volunteer at Mid-Continent Museum at North Freedom, WI. It's a little wide but, as I said before "It is steam." and it is worth preserving.

Hei Jørgen and guests! I am a new internet-user, but a longtime HOn30 fan. I have formed a group of modellers with the aim to model the Norwegian 750mm line Urskog Hølandsbanen (UHB) as faithfully as possible in HOn30 (HO9) scale. We build in sections max 600x1200mm. Rolling stock are Norwegian Rail Miniatures brass models of UHB rolling stock. We display at exhibitions in Norway. We use NS code 40 homemade track and turnouts (switches)laid on balsa sleepers and with a very fine light sand as ballast. It works fine and has an appearance very close to the real track. More later. Happy new year!

I am 52 years old and have been envoled in model railoading for almost twenty years. We now live a a comdominium and I am in the process of building a small railroad, composed of 30 x 60 inch sections. The first section is based upon Bob Van gelders small layout, that was shown in a Gazette a few years back. The foam is down and I'm up to track. I'm still doing the research on this. I like building structures best and even have one on George's FSM.

I am just finishing up my first HOn30 loco conversion using a Porter kit I got from Train & Trooper. Unfortunately, I used the wrong N guage loco and had to do a lot of backing and filling. But it's turning into quite a nice little loco, despite its lack of prototype. I'm having a lot of fun with this, once I realized that I could do basically anything I wanted with the kit. I even scratchbuilt my first air tanks to go on it. Pretty cool.

Is any familiar with AHM's Coal mine model in HO scale and its possibilites for narrow gauge modeling? I recently purchased second hand AHM's minitrains coal mine set. The steam engine was manufactured in Yugoslavia (either by Mehano or Izola) and it does not run very well. Any tips on improving its performance or on engines manufactured by other companies that I could use with the AHM coal mine model. Sincerely, Joseph Verfenstein

Fell under the influence of Frary and Hayden 15-16 years ago. Modeled an N-scale shortline that could become an HOn30 line by changing buildings and trains. Now modelling mainline N-scale mountain division of free-lanced road. Someday hope to build small portable HOn30 for display. Thanks for the website for HOn30.

Very interesting. I am in the process of building a HOn3 narrow guage line for my HO layout, all of which has a long way to go. This is particularly interesting to me, because I have spent a lot of time in Oslo doing research on the processes employed by Norway in its economic development, particularly in Sorland (Setesdal). I have found that HOn3 stuff is virtually absent from the shelves, and so I have resorted to building it myself. So...I need lots of suggestions on how to better scratchbuild cars and locos...especially locomotives. Stuff on this would be very interesting to me.

I am primarily an HO period modeler with interest in both narrow & standard gauge. I enjoy taking a look at this web site from time to time. I would like applaud the module guys for putting the track at the BACK. I have spent years in an HO module group (CVMR at Nashville). We put the tracks at the front. Bad choice. The photos of the modules at this site really show the advantage of that track at the back.

my interest isn't historical, instead i find anything that runs on a guideway, opperates in multiple and carries passingers aestheticaly pleasing and when it's built to human scale even more so. at any rate my perspective is a little unorthodox but i do build in 1/87 using n-gauge track and mechanisms (mostly kato and tomix). modern 3rd world narrowgauge and such systems as spain's FEVE are my focus. yes i'm a dreamer but there are roots in reality which might be tedius to go into detail here. at any rate thanx for the great web sites.

need an easy way to make water on your train layout? lay out where your lake is to be and paint it with white latex paint let dry and then go bye a bottle of gallery glass window color ( royal blue ) squirt some on the top of the white paint and spread with a small paint brush let dry takes awhile but in will turn a clear blue like leaded glass.

Great site Jorgen, I've very recently got back into railroads after many years of doing other things. 9mm. narrow guage was something I played around with and American HOn30 is perfect for me. Your pages provided link of information that would have taken months of research to find. But here's a question. Has anyone successfully added PFM sound to HOn30 locos? Regards Mark Kasprowicz

While I havn't availed myself of inputing anything yet, I have recently come up with a couple of questions for the experts out there in cyberland. The depot itself is great and I HAVE made use of some of those great tips. Thanks much for maintaining all this for us.

Am starting into model railroading, no layout in the last 11 years. Find myself more interested in building rolling stock than previously, and am intrigued with using the Nscale mechanisms. Saw an HOn30 loco (built on stock N 0-6-0 and car at the local hobby shop, looked like fun. Do people cut down HO equipment much and mate to the N trucks, or do most enlarge N scale or scratch build?

Can't afford the brass stuff! but hopefully Chivers Finelines will produce some more loco kits to keep us happy. The Forney is great, and the SR&RL style 2-6-2 is due out, so that will be a start. I'd just like to say Hi - and thanks for a very interesting site. I'm currently modelling standard gauge lines - in British OO and American N - but have long had a fascination with 2' gauge prototypes. In fact, I used to work on one of the Welsh NG lines, and still do an occasional turn on the Bala Lake Railway. I own a couple of 2' gauge diesel locos, but don't get much time to do anything with them.

Nice page! I'm modeling in HOn3 and don't plan to change. I was interested in your scale as it uses N scale mechanisms and this is my biggest problem with HOn3, getting anything that's not brass to go forward or backward without binding or stalling. I recall my N scale days and how smoothly my motive power operated. Living in Oregon, my favorite modeling subject is logging, as if you couldn't guess. I live in Medford and the Rough & Ready Lumber Co. is about an hour from here.

I have always been fascinated by narrow gauge -- particularly HOe and HO 2 1/2 because they involve a strong element of imagination if you wish to create an American prototype, as opposed to building a Swiss or Austrian model railway. There's an inherent license to create one's fantasy railway about it.

Nice page! I'm a Hayden-Frary addict since Elk River Line days. I freelance a coastal Northwest railway loosely based on 30 in. prototypes in California. But I'm interested in Maine two-footers and 3-foot lines elsewhereas well.

Enjoy reading articles about those modeling in HOn2 1/2. Are any of the Great MRR's with CDRRR article left? If you know of other sources, please E-Mail me. I RR biweekly with an operaion-oriented group in Dallas. We are Ex-Cliff Robinson operators who keep carrying the torch here in Dallas. Cliff owned the MUT RR and was a friend to many, including John Allen and Jim Findley. Someday I'll try HON30! Your Home Page was a real find. THANKS

Very nice. I just had to come over or should that be look from across the water at our, the narrow minded peoples, home page. I hope you got my message about the motors. If they are indeed Faulhaber motors, are they cheaper over there than here. I still have to pay in US funds so $100cdn works out to $140cdn with all the exchange and shipping. I definately had no problem running pulse power on them. Most motors can run on pulse. Just some do not like low frequency pulses. Good quality motors usually like something around the 1kHz mark Talk you again tomorrow on the group discussion. Joerg
